Our cover of Stromae’s ‘Papaoutai’ is now online

Covering ‘Papaoutai’ was no easy task. Stromae’s song owes a great deal to its production – that crisp, almost mechanical beat, which contrasts with the harshness of the lyrics. The real challenge for us was to recapture that contrast without using the same tools.

So we chose to strip it back to its core narrative: the absence of a father, and a child asking a question that nobody answers. Carried by two voices and more stripped-back arrangements, it takes on a new flavour without losing any of its edge.
